France has been the breeding ground for many international fashion icons over the years but as a French person myself, I am possibly more familiar with attention-worthy national icons who never really made it abroad. Two of our fashion queens from back in the day, you should be acquainted with already – namely Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin (although Birkin is a UK native) – each a model slash actress slash singer slash fashion icon slash muse. You may however be less familiar with Jane Birkin’s offspring.
Jane Birkin is mother to two French It girls, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon. Considering their fathers were Serge Gainsbourg, a hugely influential singer who left an indelible mark on the world of French music, and indie film director Jacques Doillon, the girls were born in the world of show business to very artistic and successful parents. It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that they should follow in their parents’ footsteps. In any case, they certainly inherited their mother’s killer style.
Without further ado, meet Lou Doillon:
Now meet Charlotte Gainsbourg:
Could it be that all French women draw their fashion powers from messy bangs and cigarettes? Some food for thought right there.
